DARREN Ferguson will take a 'bold is best' approach to securing a shock Championship win at Newcastle on Saturday (3pm).
The Posh boss is prepared to gamble by throwing two rookies into the fray in front of 40,000 baying Geordie fans.

Teenage centre-back Ryan Bennett and attacking midfielder Josh Simpson (below) - who was delivering furniture for a living seven days ago - could well be involved from the start at the home of the table-toppers.

Posh boss Ferguson is planning a new formation for the toughest trip of the season, but he will not be abandoning his attacking principles.

Ferguson said: "We will play in a slightly different way tomorrow. Our philosophy won't change, but our formation might.

"We will be going there to win and we will still try and play in an attractive manner, but we will hopefully have some surprises in store.

"We want to put on a performance fit for our surroundings, but more importantly we want three points.
"I don't have the biggest squad to pick from, but in Ryan and Josh I have two new players who look ready to me.

"Ryan impressed me from the minute he walked through the door. He is a very mature young man and he has trained very well."

Full coverage: Newcastle v Posh.

"When he came here he was someone I thought I would be able to use pretty much straight away and from what I've seen so far that is true.

"And Josh looks to be a big talent who can do a job in the Championship right now. I'm very happy to have him here."

Bennett's height will be a factor in his chances of selection as Newcastle's highly-rated young striker Andy Carroll has a massive physical presence. Bennett could replace error-prone centre-back Craig Morgan or Gaby Zakuani, who was substituted midway through the second half of last weekend's disappointing home defeat by Barnsley.

It's unlikely Shaun Batt will retain his place up front, and with Craig Mackail-Smith rated very doubtful because of a hamstring problem, Posh may flood the midfield with Simpson, fit-again Paul Coutts and Dean Keates all competing for a call-up.

George Boyd could also be asked to play close to lone striker Aaron Mclean.
Mackail-Smith joined in training yesterday and travelled north with the team today, but club insiders believe he is unlikely to be involved.

Teams:

Posh - (from) Lewis, Lee, Bennett, Zakuani, Rowe, Whelpdale, Diagouraga, Keates, Frecklington, Boyd, Mclean, Morgan, McKeown, Coutts, Simpson, Martin, Pearce, Mackail-Smith, Day, Green, Batt.
Newcastle - (from) Harper, Simpson, Kadar, S. Taylor, R. Taylor, Colocinni, Enrique, Smith, Butt, Gutierrez, Nolan, Carroll, Ranger, Donaldson, Tozer, Krul, Guthrie, Geremi, Harewood.

Newcastle's Hughton admits Posh have some great players
NEWCASTLE manager Chris Hughton has admitted that Peterborough possess great players.

Hughton was impressed by the Posh performance back in September when they dumped Newcastle out of the Carling Cup.

He's confident of a different outcome tomorrow as The Magpies attempt to stretch their unbeaten home run to eight league matches, but he will warn his players against complacency.

Hughton said: "It is a completely different scenario this time around, although it is worth revisiting the cup match.

"That night they showed they are a very tough team to play against and they have some great players.
"Yes, we did have a young team out that night, but certain things do stick in your mind.

"They beat us on merit that night and proved that every team wants to be beat Newcastle.

"Teams like Peterborough and Scunthorpe will always raise their game against us and Peterborough are sure to fight hard for everything tomorrow.

"The teams that came down from the Premier League with us last season have also struggled at times which shows how tough this league is.

"But our home record is there for all to see, although we are due to win a game comfortably. Hopefully that will be tomorrow."

51% of you moaners and whingers say:- Sack him now,
You lot ought to be ashamed of yourselves, a total disgrace, after the sucess D.F. has brought to Peterborough.
I'm so pleased and delighted I moved out the Godforsaken area.

Cheekymich, that's now 52%. Absolutely AMAZING.

A complete sack of s**ts, moaning negative *******s.

I agree with you Mitch. Glad I moved away as well. I cannot imagine any other club who had had the success that Fergie has brought to the City having back stabbers in force like this.

DISGUSTING.

I doubly hope now that DF's prediction of not being relegated comes true so he can stick two fingers up to the whingers.

While I am at it, I also think that for a City the size of Peterborough so few actually turn out to support their City side. SHAMEFUL. You don't deserve a league club let alone a Championship side.

That's a bit unfair I don't live in Peterborough but I do travel to all home games and some away I've followed Posh for nigh on 50 years

I think you'll find the votes here are not representative of real Posh fans, as for poor attendances if you've followed Posh long enough it's the way it's always been many in Peterborough have no interest in football, and many come from down south and follow Prem teams

I'll always follow Posh and as for Fergie being sacked that's just idiots who repeat vote absolutely no credence can be taken from it ...Rant over

Posh4ever, agree totally that poor attendances have been the norm, but it doesn't make it right. I've supported POSH for 35 years so know it all too well. We have a decent core support; just look at away attendances, however, I just think that people should make an effort to support the club of their City instead of following Man U or some other big club they never go & watch.

You make my point well for me though given you don't live there but still travel to watch your team.

Fair point It's Posh up North, it does'nt make it right but you see most of the Asian immigrants don't follow football and the overspill from down south, many prefer to go back down there to watch their football, but when we survive which with Fergie and Darragh we will this season, and get the council to get moving on a new ground the fan base will grow

It's not going to happen overnight I'm afraid

On another note looking forward to my trip "up north" tomorrow ;-)

DF should stay in charge without issue. However, he and Darragh were wrong for saying we were looking at promotion this season, that has provoked much frustration.

Interesting how reprobates like cheeky and up north feel it's wrong to say anything bad about the club but it's appropriate to dump on the city itself. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see who the real disgraces are. Hope the door didn't hit you in the ar*e on the way out. As for Fergie, I'm sorry but a dead dog could have led Posh to those 2 promotions b/c of the money that was spent at the time. Now no money, no great manager. Or are you going to tell that is the wildest coincidence in history?

Because dick head they have been my team for all of my life & will remain that. Point is Chip, you NEVER say anything good about them. You are an ill informed idiot that makes statements based upon what? Nothing. You don't watch them so how can you talk about stuff you never witness?
