POSH are hoping to have a new centre-back in place before the battle to climb the Championship table resumes on October 17.
The club’s director of football, Barry Fry, who is in charge of transfer negotiations at London Road, confirmed today that Posh have stepped up their pursuit of one of manager Darren Ferguson’s main summer targets.

The player concerned would be signed on loan for the rest of the season rather than on a permanent basis. Posh have also handed England Under-20 right-back Elliot Omozusi a trial, but he was not thought to have impressed during Tuesday’s reserve team draw at Wycombe.

Fry said: “There is definitely a chance we could have a defender in the squad before our next match. It’s a player the manager made his major target in the summer, but for one reason or another we weren’t able to complete a deal.

“We have an agreement in place with the player, but the club are keen on tying the lad to a new contract before they allow him to go on loan.”

Posh were linked with an unnamed Premier League central defender throughout the close season before signing a different target, teenager Krystian Pearce from Birmingham City.

However Pearce has yet to be trusted with a Championship start despite Posh failing to keep a solitary clean sheet. Omozusi, who is eligible to play for Nigeria as well as England, was released by Fulham at the end of last season.

He played regularly for Norwich City in the first half of the Championship last season and has recently spent time on trial at Sheffield United.

Ferguson is currently on secondment with the Irish national team as they prepare for their vital World Cup qualifying clash with Italy in Dublin this Saturday.

The Posh boss is studying Irish manager Giovanni Trapattoni’s coaching methods as part of his UEFA A coaching badge course.

Ferguson remains in constant contact with the club and the support for his position from within Posh remains massive.

Posh have just seven points from their first 11 matches prompting national bookmakers to make them favourites for relegation, but Fry has drawn on his own experience as a manager to convince Ferguson that things can change quickly in football.

Fry was in charge of Posh in the 2002-03 when they lost seven straight games in August and September and sat 22nd in Division Two at the turn of the year. Posh rallied to finish 11th.

Fry said: “Everything was against us then, but it only takes one win to change things around. We finished in the top half of the table that season after a dreadful start when we didn’t know where a win or a goal was coming from.

“I keep reminding Darren that things change quickly in football and they will for us. We have the best chairman we have ever had, the brightest manager and a very talented squad of players.

“We have had no luck so far this season.

It is true, Posh have had no luck so far this season. I am confident, with the players they have and a defence well aware of their shortcomings, they will climb to safety.

Not that old chestnut again! Weve had no luck! what were the two goals against Newcastle then? a lucky deflection onto the goalscorers head for the first and a sliced cross for the second as for Ferguson taking advice of Fry are things really that desperate at London road these days? Get real!

Are the defence aware of their shortcomings? I am just thinking of the "We'll hammer someone soon" headline from Tom Williams.
The real question is which players are good enough to correct their shortcomings. A lot of mistakes are being made because players are a long way from their comfort zone and struggling to cope with a higher standard of football.

OK Mr Borian...Lets take your slant on one game and put it right...Firstly CMS goal was a stunning reaction to head past the keeper, there was no deflection, it was head to ball. Second goal, Tom Williams saw the GK take the step to thr right and drilled the ball into the near post gap. These are very simple facts that if 1. You had ever played football you'd know. 2 You'd attended the game you would have seen very easily (even through those green, hate for Fry and DMac eyes of yours) seen. 3 You were as knowledgable regarding football as you are verbose you'd probably be running FIFA. In fact scrap the last one, the people running FIFA are just like you.

Borian, while CMS scores with his head quite often, you always talk out the back of yours. I'm sure that the Fry spin is happening while the gaffer is away & no I don't think that DF could learn anything from Fry. Paper spin.

Now be a good old timer & get back on the bar stool & concentrate on your sangria. Leave the footie to those that go.

As long as it's an EXPERIENCED Premier League central defender then it's a step in the right direction.

Correct me if Im wrong but I could have sworn I saw at least 5 times on tv a clearance from a Newcastle defender that deflected off a Posh players knees to the said goalscorers head, and if Williams is such an intelligent footballer that he meant to score his first goal in an eternity whats he doing here? Yes I have played football on a regular basis and have a good knowledge of it! Espana are Euro champs and probably the best team in the world at present! Where did you cut your teeth Catfiddler watching Whittlesey Blue Star!

If you had actually been at the Newcastle game Borian, instead of watching the goals on TV, you would have seen that a 10-0 win for Posh would have been no exaggeration. It doesnt matter how we scored our goals you clown.
