MacAnthony hits backs at claims of broken promises

AARON Mclean made a series of stunning contract demands including an image rights payment before requesting a transfer from Posh.
Chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that the club's star striker agreed to stay at London Road over the weekend, but changed his mind after negotiations over a new contract broke down.

MacAnthony today disclosed that Mclean, through his agent, asked for...

  • X amount per week which would have thrown the club's wage structure into chaos.

  • A guarantee that he would always be the best paid player at the club.

  • A signing on fee every summer.

  • X amount for his image rights.

  • A release clause in his contract if anyone bids £2.5m.

MacAnthony released the information in response to a claim by Mclean's agent that the club had 'broken promises' to the player.

Mclean believed he would be allowed to leave Posh if a 'bigger' club came in for him - Championship side Wolves have had two £1 million pound bids for the player rejected by Posh.

But MacAnthony countered: "I don't break promises and I have not gone back on my word at all.

"I have always promised Aaron that I would not stand in his way if a Premier League club came in for him

"Aaron phoned me last week, thanked me for my support, asked if he could take me up on my previous offer of a new contract and said that he would now like to stay at the club.

"I then spoke to his agent for a good hour on the phone, but I nearly fell over when he set out the terms Aaron wanted.

"Anyhow I offered Aaron the best contract this club has seen and his agent laughed at it – Aaron asked for a transfer the following day.

"I adore Aaron for what he has achieved for our club and I am very fond of him, however the club always comes first over player power.

"Aaron is contracted to the club for three more years and I don't need to give him a pound more per week, but he felt he deserved a pay rise and a healthy new deal regardless of outside interest.

"I am afraid his head is all over the place and this happens in football.

"If Wolves believe in him as much as I always have, they know the price it will take to buy him. If they don't then he stays and plays for his place in our fantastic team as per his current contract.

"It upsets me that I have been made out to have broken promises as I have only ever helped Aaron when he has needed it – with loans for his car and various other things.

"I am now asking him to repay me with some loyalty and concentrate on scoring the goals which will help us win League One next season.

"If he does that then it should get him the move to a BIG club in the Premier League and not to a club in the Championship who didn't have the balls to buy him when he was playing non-league football.

"Let me also state this for our fans and for our young squad. Now is the time to focus and concentrate on League One and winning it.

Hopefully, Wolves will come in with an offer the club is happy with and we can put all this behind us. Football would be a much nicer place without agents

Kiwi, I think Darragh's comments seem fair. He's not slagging Aaron personally.

KiwiinPboro, which part of contractual obligation don't you understand? Point out one piece of the article in which DM is trying to assassinate AM, we all know how agents try to do the "best" by their players, in this case they have met their match....thank the lord for that. So now AM instead of earning more money, will still be playing for Posh for the same wages as before, doesn't seem like he has a good business head, maybe he should stick to kicking the ball into the back of the net on a very regular basis.

I understand contract and law very well, it's my job - doh!! I agree agents are behind this but attack the agent not the player.

Nobosy will pay 3 million for him but you now expect him to train and play for your team as normal - he won't be committed or care so it backfires.

Just because you own a club doesn't mean you treat people like dirt. What's his excuse for Mark Tyler?

How the hell can anyone blame D Mac for this!?!

What a load of cobblers, the guy has been completely screwed over by his agent and its plain to see, if Wolves dont come up with the £2.5m fee, then he has ruined his POSH career as a result of all this...

If AM would have gone about this professionally saying his career didnt have the future he wanted at POSH then there would be no issue......his agent has had the last laugh!

I do agree with Mark Tyler to a degree, but he does not feature in the clubs plans, it happens in football and apart from not allowing him to sun himself in Marbella, whats D Mac done to him?!?!

Hopefully Darragh will be at the club a very long time, but players just pass through. Players have far too much power these days, rightly or wrongly, so it's probably best to let Aaron go, if that is indeed what he wants.

His agent is only trying to get the best deal for his client, so you can't blame him either. The club are trying to get the best available price for a player they would rather keep. The player wants to play at the highest level as soon as possible.

As fans, we don't want to lose a 30 goal a season striker, even if he may not score as many next season.

One way or another this needs sorting out quickly, otherwise it could ruin our whole pre-season plans. What potential transfer target would want to join a club with all this bickering going on?
