DARREN Ferguson believes star Posh striker Aaron Mclean will live to regret his decision to go on the transfer list.
Mclean rocked the club yesterday by handing in a written transfer request just two days after declaring he was happy to stay at London Road following the rejection of two £1 million bids from Championship side Wolves.

Mclean's agent James Barrett claimed today that 'broken promises' were behind the striker's decision to seek a move. He scored 33 goals as Posh surged to promotion from League Two last season and interest from Wolves led Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony to make Mclean the most lucrative contract offer in the club's history.

Ferguson said: "I'm obviously disappointed and I believe Aaron has made the wrong decision. He's obviously gone away, spoken to his advisors and decided to hand in a transfer request which is his right.

"But I am pretty relaxed about the whole thing. At least we have closure and we know where everyone stands. We made Aaron a great offer, but he's decided he wants to leave instead.

"But until we receive an offer which matches our valuation he remains our player and he remains in my plans. We need to move on from all the speculation now and concentrate on getting ready for the new season – I will not be seeking another striker at this time."

Wolves are the only club to have made a formal bid for Mclean, but their top offer of £1.25m is way below the Posh valuation of £3 million.

In a terse statement on the club's website, MacAnthony said: "I offered Aaron the most lucrative contract in the history of Peterborough United and Aaron has responded by putting in a transfer request.

"We have therefore reluctantly placed Aaron on the transfer list and any interested parties will have to pay the club £3 million up front plus various add-ons and a sell-on clause for the transfer of his registration.

"As far as I am concerned, if we do not get the asking price then Aaron will work out the remainder of his Peterborough United contract until 2011."

Mclean's agent Barrett said today: "Aaron was told that the club would not stand in his way if a bigger club came in for him."

MacAnthony has stated publicly in the past that he would not stand in any player's way should a Premier League club come calling.

Mclean declined to comment today.

*Please enter your comment*Very disappointed, think he should have had another Season with us.The Championship is 3-4 notches up the ladder and it will be interesting to see how he copes.
Mark Tyler,14 years loyal Service being left behind from Spainish trip and trains with the Reserves, did NOT ask for a transfer,it will be very interesting to see how the Club deal with Aaron, hopefully not with double standards.

Aaron is being advised by the obligatory greedy agent. If his heart is not in the Posh camp, he is better off up the road.....for £5m.

I know for a fact that Darragh MacAnthony has said he would not stop any player wanting to leave IF a PREMIERSHIP club was interested in them. Wolverhampton Wanderers are NOT a Premiership club. Mr Barrett is wrong in his statement that promises have been broken.
Perhaps Mr Barrett would like to go on record stating how much he will make from this deal if it goes through?

Aaron McLean has been ill-advised, if he goes to Wolves he will go from 1st choice striker to 4th choice at best, and will be lucky to be picked as sub. there are much better strikers already at Wolves.

I am interested to hear why people think he'll so far down the pecking order at Wolves?!?!

Kightly has impressed, Bothroyd, Eastwood etc are on their way out, I can only think of Evan-Blake and Kightly, and he is not far behind him!!

I think he'd be fine, and its a massive step up in class from Peterborough....think about it, stop being arrogant about a little success!!!

If he is still with Posh when they go to Spain he should be made to stay at home & train with the others on the transfer list, as they didn't ask to be put on it. Still with any luck he will have left before then as he could well unsettle the team with an attitude like his.

Having been one of Ferguson’s favourite players, however he performed, unlike Adam Newton, Ferguson might at long last think twice & treat all his squad equally as ‘Respect’ comes to mind which Ferguson doesn’t appear to command.

he has not got the class to step up to the championship.he needed one more season with posh to cement his abillity and prove himself to be a class player, agree that its mostly down to agents and the big pound signs in his eyes,if he wants to spend all season on the bench then thats up to him,and that just proves the move is all about money, and not the love of football.

Poshpanther -what do you base your assumption that Fergie doesn't command respect on?

I don't see the problem... A big Championship club has come knocking and he wants to leave this small club. He will get more opportunities a better pay deal. He must think about himself first and secure his future at a higher level. Ciao AM
