BRENTFORD have made a shock bid to sign Posh full-back Adam Newton.
The League Two club have made an inquiry for the 27 year-old which is under consideration by the Posh management team.

Newton has one year left on his Posh contract, but manager Darren Ferguson has revealed that signing a new right-back is a priority following the release of Claude Gnakpa at the end of last season.

Posh director of football Barry Fry confirmed Brentford's interest in Newton, but declined to comment further. Newton started his career in London with West Ham, but has made close to 250 appearances for Posh since moving to London Road in 2002.

He was in and out of the Posh side throughout last season, but finished the promotion campaign as first choice as Gnakpa fell out of favour during contract discussions.

Posh manager Darren Ferguson is closing in on his first signing of the summer. He spoke twice to an unnamed transfer target over the weekend.

The player concerned, who would be available on a free transfer, has asked for time to consider the Posh offer. He is not one of the Premier League players Posh are trying to sign on loan.

Ferguson said: "Talks went very well. I spoke to the player on Friday and again last night and I'm hopeful he'll come to us.

"We are a very attractive club in many ways so I'm fairly confident that all the players we have targeted will join us. It's just a case of being patient as we only need three or four new ones to have a squad capable of challenging for promotion again."

Ferguson has now flown out to Moscow for the Champions League Final on Wednesday between his father's Manchester United side and Chelsea.

Posh are also trying to offload six unwanted members of the first-team squad. Long-serving goalkeeper Mark Tyler is expected to join Hull if they win Saturday's Championship Play-off Final with Bristol City, while fellow keeper Shwan Jalal is a target for Conference side Oxford United.

Oxford are also showing interest in left-back Danny Blanchett, while League Two sides Lincoln and Rotherham have been linked with striker Danny Crow. Crow is understood to have turned down the chance to join Rotherham last season.

Full-back Adam Smith and winger Josh Low have also been made available for transfer. Low is one of the highest paid players at Posh and has three years of his London Road contract to run.

Cheerio and good luck. A thoroughly nice bloke with all the skills but couldn't seem to get himself hyped up to use them on any consistent basis and who never lived up to his own ability.
