NEW boy Russell Martin is convinced Posh can finish top of the class next season.
Despite only being at the club for six weeks, the £50,000 summer transfer from Wycombe has already seen enough to be sure that his new team has more than enough to compete with the best League One has to offer.

And he is convinced that he will be able to play a big part in the Posh push for a second successive promotion.

Martin said: "I had an injury early in pre-season, but I've settled in really well and I will get better. I have made no secret of the fact that I intend to try and make that right back spot my own.

"I know that will be difficult as the gaffer has two quality players for every position, but I will give it my all to be a regular. I may not have been here very long but I played against most of these boys last season and I knew then they were a quality side.

"But training alongside them has really opened my eyes to how good they really are and it has been a definite step up for me in that respect.

"We have so many quality players all across the park that I fully expect us to be at the top of the league challenging for promotion this season, be it through the playoffs or automatic promotion.

"I know it is going to take a lot of hard work to earn a place and then keep it but that's not a problem for me as I like a challenge.

"That is why I joined the club. I am very ambitious and determined to play as high through the leagues as I can and I am sure that Peterborough are more than good enough to make that happen."

And one man Martin is backing to play a big part in the promotion push is former Wycombe team-mate Sergio Torres.

The Argentinian missed much of pre-season, but according to Martin the flying winger will have a massive impact once he has fully recovered from ankle surgery.

Martin added: "Sergio is a fantastic attacking player who can create opportunities out of nothing.

"He has pace and likes to run at defenders which not only creates chances and space for others but also means he will weigh in with a fair few goals himself too.

"I am sure he will be a big hit with Posh fans when he is fit and I fully expect him to play a big part in the season ahead."
