Ferguson is confident he has a squad capable of achieving success in League One as long as they hit the ground running and cut out the inconsistency which ultimately cost them the League Two title last season.
Ferguson said: "We should carry plenty of momentum forward from last season and that will hopefully work to our advantage because a good start is imperative.
"We have a tough first game against a Southend side who will be up there challenging for promotion so if we can get a good result there we will gain a lot of confidence.
"What we must cut out is the odd dreadful display which occasionally cropped up last season. We can't afford to put in performances like we did at Mansfield and at home to Macclesfield at this level."

"I do honestly believe that we will enjoy playing in League One. Teams should be more positive against us at home and away and that will work in our favour.
"I can't imagine the likes of Leeds and Leicester coming to London Road for a point so there should be some cracking games.
"We certainly won't be changing our style of play. We will be trying to win every game, but no-one should expect scorelines like we produced against Accrington or Brentford.
"I expect Leeds and Leicester to be the front-runners, while Huddersfield are having a real go this season, but the bottom line is there will be no gimmees in League One.
"But I have full confidence in my squad especially with the additions we have made. I am really pleased to get Russell Martin and Sergio Torres, while Shaun Batt gives us some extra pace down the right wing and Paul Coutts looks a real find - he will be a contender for a first-team place straight away.
"I have no doubt that last year's players will be even better this season. People like Charlie Lee will be stronger and fitter for having a full season of first-team football under their belts and the likes of George Boyd, Aaron Mclean and Craig Mackail-Smith will enjoy League One.
"It's still a tough, physical league, but there will be a bit more time to play and that will suit us down to the ground."
