A MUSIC and poetry extravaganza has been organised by a Peterborough teenager to help some of the world's poorest people.
Kate Harris (19), of Minster Precincts, Peterborough, has arranged the Strawberries and Cream event to raise money for Christian Aid.
The UK based charity works in more than 50 countries across the world to help those living in poverty.
The Gl
ass Onion, in Burghley Road, will host the fund-raiser on Saturday at 8pm. Entry is free of charge, but those attending are encouraged to make a donation to the worthy cause.
A number of city acts are on the line-up, including poets Keely Mills and Bev Walsh, as well as folk musician James Chadwick, who is also on the bill at the Stamford Riverside Festival.
Miss Harris said: "There has been a real change in Peterborough in terms of the arts scene. We're getting a lot more musical and literary events than ever before, and, as well as raising awareness about world issues, I thought this was a really good opportunity to highlight all that the city has to offer.
"I love the atmosphere at the Glass Onion. Everyone is really friendly, and you never feel like you're on your own. The Onion has become a really important part of Peterborough. It's a place where everyone is welcome, and I just love being there.
"What with climate change, the global food crisis, famine in East Africa, the cyclone in Burma and what's happening in Zimbabwe, the world really is in a lot of turmoil.
"Christian Aid, alongside other organisations, is helping the poorest people in our world to not only survive, but to live, and is pushing for real changes to be made in the way our world works."
