POLICE officers and staff at Huntingdon Police Station dug deep to help a man on a charity mission.
Steve Patmore, a caretaker at a London primary school, is walking from Great Ormond Street Hospital to Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Sick Children.

He has been sponsored £2,500 for the children's charity Rays of Sunshine.

He must do it without spending one penny and has been camping in his tent and living off the land.

However, soaked to the skin and carrying a soggy tent, Steve (28) turned up at Huntingdon police station on Tuesday afternoon hoping for a cell for the night.

Steve said: "I camped the previous night at woods near Sandy and my tent was completely flooded.

"Since walking from Sandy I had been looking for a room or somewhere I could dry my things and everyone had turned me away."

Pc Luke Coulson said: "We did a whip round at the station and booked him a room at a B and B. It's a worthy cause and officers and staff were only too pleased to chip in."

Steve set off the next morning to Peterborough. He began his journey on May 31 and has 32 days to get to Glasgow.
