Lainey Hough from the city is well on her way to becoming one in a million.
Lainey is only 18 months old, but is the face of a charity initiative aiming to collect a million pennies, the equivalent to £10,000, to help orphans in Kenya.

Although there is a long way to go, the tiny fund-raiser, with the help of mum Tracy (32), has gathered almost 13,000 coins since the campaign began in April.

The money will go to the Indi Nursery Project, which is in the process of building a school in the troubled African country.

Tracy Hough said: "Schools have been having presentations about the work being done in Kenya and then deciding to take part and fill jars. Businesses have also joined in by having collection points in their workplaces.

"Usually it can be difficult to get money out of people, but when you are only asking for coppers, they seem eager to give them away.

"The collection has been going well, but in order to get to the total in a short space of time, we need as much help as possible.

"Lainey has really been using the cute factor to get people to donate. At her nursery she puts herself in charge of looking after the collection.

"Most people like the idea of donating, but get really keen when they know more about the project.

"Literally every penny donated goes directly to the project helping the children, there aren't even any administration charges involved," Tracy said.

Julie Perry, who runs the charity appeal, said: "Almost 13,000 coins is excellent progress, but we still really need more people to come on board to help us achieve the target.

"When the £10,000 mark is reached, it will cover the costs of two classrooms and help 60 children."
