A CYCLIST put his pedal power to the test to raise more than £2,000 for a city charity.
John Scotney, of Cromwell Way, Market Deeping, has just completed a 1,010-mile cycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats to raise funds for Sue Ryder Care's Thorpe Hall hospice, in Peterborough.

The 65-year-old completed his journey over three weeks, and he spent the first 700 miles pedalling on his own.

He was then joined by his son, Daniel, in Glasgow for the final 300-mile leg through the most scenic part of the trip, the Scottish Highlands.

This was the father and son's second big cross-country trip after previously taking part in a coast-to-coast challenge across England five years ago.

Since then, they have rode various routes together each year, including trips in Cornwall and the Pyrenees, and last year they rode from London to Paris.

The pair have now raised more than £2,000 for Sue Ryder.

Mr Scotney said: "The ride was a real test of endurance, very hilly, at times very wet, but never once did I feel I was not going to succeed.

"It was joyful to finally see the 'Welcome to John O'Groats' sign."
