A DOTING grandmother is hoping her home-made Christmas cards will fetch hundreds of pounds while keeping the memory of her grandson alive.
While most people get their inspiration through images and memories, June Wollerton's come when she least expects it – in the middle of the night.

For the 62-year-old, from Crowland, near Peterborough, believes her nine-year-old grandson Kyle, who died in July 2007 of an asthma attack, is spurring on her charity Christmas card-making scheme and feeding inspirational poems and verses into her dreams.

This is the second year Mrs Wollerton has designed, made and sold the cards, but thinks it may be the last. Therefore, she hopes her pile of 700 will raise more than £1,000 for Asthma UK.

Mrs Wollerton said: "I just wake up in the middle of the night and suddenly have these verses in my head, so I get up quickly and right them down.

"It is as if Kyle is up there trying to help me. Although there is no cure for asthma, if we can help someone else and prevent another family going through what we have then it will be worth it.

"This may be the last year, too, as my husband is retiring, so I don't know if we will be able to afford to print the cards."

Mrs Wollerton will be selling three card designs this year, one of which reflects the more religious side of the festive occasion, with pictures of sheperds.

The other shows Santa looking through the window at a family around a Christmas tree, and the third is of a snow scene, with Santa flying across the sky in his sleigh.

All the cards have a picture of Kyle on the back, dressed in an elf outfit, as he unwrapped his presents in Christmas 2005.

Last year, the grandmother of three made 500 cards but only sold 283, however, still made more than £820.

The cards cost £1.50 each and all the money will go directly to Asthma UK.

Kyle's family have been pulling out the stops since he died, in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for the charity, which will always remain close to their hearts.

Their latest fund-raising drive took place last month when members of the family ran the Great Eastern fun run, raising more than £350.

Mrs Wollerton added: "Everyone has been so brilliant, the support since Kyle died has been unbelievable. We hope we can keep it going and raise a few more pounds for this very good cause."

The Christmas cards are now on sale at various shops across Crowland, including Crowland News and Food, Abbots Angling, Crowland Caravans, Spar, the Abbey Hotel and City and County Estate Agents.

Mrs Wollerton will be running a Christmas card stall at the Crowland Christmas lights switch-on, on November 29.
