PANTHERS 47 BELLE VUE 45 (Elite League A)
IF British speedway bosses intended to create edge-of-your-seat racing filled with overtaking moves galore, they appear to have got it spot on.

Their controversial decision to slash the team-building points limit in the winter went down about as well as Wayne Rooney does at Anfield.

Effectively driving out some of the best riders in the world and forcing teams to sign others who are clearly not up to top level action hardly seemed a winner.

But a few weeks into the season – and on the evidence of the opening four competitive meetings at the Showground – it is beginning to look a shrewd move.

Those who like their speedway to be nail-bitingly close are certainly getting their wish at Alwalton.

Once a formidable hunting ground when opposition teams were relieved to reach 35 points, visiting riders are now helping to serve up some fine speedway at this speedy and currently slick venue.

Ipswich were pipped by four points, Lakeside left with a share of the spoils and Eastbourne went down by six.

Now this two-point triumph can be added to the list of meetings that have been high on entertainment and low on predictability.

Few could have expected captain Hans Andersen to be tasting defeat three times in his own manor – even if the defeats were being dished out by former Panthers favourite and top world star Jason Crump.

But those results didn't have a major bearing on the outcome as the rest of the Panthers corps finally gave the skipper some proper backing.

Andersen said: "There was some really good action and I am not surprised about the final score because Belle Vue have been doing really well away lately."

Kenneth Bjerre delivered his most polished performance of the season against his former club while Danny King proved he has the class to operate at heat leader by reeling off three successive wins.

Claus Vissing again chipped in handily from reserve and Henrik Moller would surely have scored more than two if being more willing to ride the outside.

But second string was again the department that caused most concern.
