A-LEVEL RESULTS: Sir Harry Smith pupil shocked to get place at Cambridge

A pupil at Sir Harry Smith Community College in Whittlesey has got the grades to take up a place at the University of Cambridge.

Katie-Anne Jardine achieved A* in English language and literature, A in history and A in sociology and can now take up her place to read human, social and political sciences at Corpus Christi College.

The course is highly competitive, attracting applications from 1,070 students for around 170 places across the university.

Katie-Anne said: “I could not be more grateful for the encouragement I have received during the application process. Getting an interview shocked me, let alone actually achieving an offer. I can’t wait to see what is ahead!”

Dawn White, associate principal, said: “We are incredibly proud of Katie-Anne’s excellent results and that she has been able to achieve her ultimate ambition of gaining a place at Cambridge University.

“We hope that this will inspire other students to follow in Katie-Anne’s footsteps and realise that nothing is impossible with hard work and determination.”

Overall, the percentage of pupils at the college gaining A*-A grades was 28 per cent.

For A*-B grades it was 44 per cent and A*-C grades it was 80 per cent.

The overall pass rate was 99 per cent with 94 per cent of the students accepting offers to study at university.

Solomon Davies achieved A, A, B and will be going to Queen Mary University of London to read business management.

Adam Ruff with a C, A and A* will be going to Lincoln to read games computing, and Megan Young with two As and a B will be going to the University of East Anglia to read history.

Thomas Cave was successful in obtaining a sponsored degree in engineering and technology with the BBC.

For vocational students, 100 per cent received a Distinction* to Pass grade, 94 per cent gained a Distinction* to Merit grade and 91 per cent achieved a Distinction* to Distinction grade.

Steven Surridge and Katie Barnes both gained three Distinction* grades while Naomi Hall gained two Distinction* grades and one Distinction grade.
