Review into Peterborough city cleaning after fly-tipping concerns

Members of a scrutiny committee on Peterborough City Council have set up a Task and Finish Group to review the contract with Amey, the firm which manages the service.

Six councillors from six political parties, supported by James Collingridge, Amey partnership manager, will produce a final report in a month’s time.

Councillor Keith Sharp, Liberal Party member for Dogsthorpe, is on the group. He said: “These are issues raised over a period of time and the committee decided the review group would be a good idea to focus on the issues.

“In my opinion Peterborough is deteriorating through the number of people fly-tipping and leaving a mess and we need to address it.

“Fly-tipping is a big issue at the moment but we can’t just focus on one specific item.”

The review group’s remit is to “look at the current street cleansing levels across the city and assess if they meet the current demand.”

This will be done by assessing whether the appropriate machinery is being used for each location and to work with officers to address local issues which hinder the cleaning, such as parked cars.

Cllr Nick Sandford, Liberal Democrat member for Paston and Walton, is on the committee which set up the Task and Finish Group. He wants the group to highlight how much it would cost to fund additional cleaning across the city if that is what they recommend.

He said: “I would like to ensure Amey are fulfilling their obligations under their contract. If people are advocating going beyond their contract we need to see the financial obligations before that.”
