Organisers of the St John Ambulance Cadet unit in March are appealing for new volunteers to step forward.
There are spaces available for children and adults.
Adult volunteers learn first aid and provide cover at local events, delivering treatment to members of the public who require it. There are also opportunities for support volunteers, who do not go on duty at events but instead assist with the running of the unit. No previous first aid experience is necessary as all training will be given by existing volunteers and trainers.
Cadets are St John Ambulance’s volunteers aged between 10 and 17 years old. Youth leaders will help them learn the skills needed to save a life, as well as guiding them through games and activities to work towards their Grand Prior Award, the highest accolade that can be achieved by a St John Ambulance Cadet.
Badgers are the youngest St John Ambulance volunteers, aged between seven and 10 years old, and work towards completing their Super Badger Award, which includes learning first aid as well as completing 12 subjects ranging from Creative and Active to Healthy and Caring. This lively programme has been developed to enable young people to learn important life skills in a fun and safe environment.
Beryl Fernandez, a long-standing volunteer at the March unit, said: “We’re really keen to hear from local people who would be interested in volunteering for the adult unit. Our event bookings this year are looking busy now and we will be providing first aid cover at the St George’s Day Parade in March, the Parson Drove Car, Bike and Trike Show, the Wisbech and District Vehicle Club’s annual road run, the March Christmas market and other public gatherings in the local area.
“We also want to revitalise the Cadet unit in March and develop our Badger sett. We have many opportunities for young people to become volunteers and I’d encourage local parents to think about enrolling their children so that they can learn first aid and become the next generation of life savers.”
Anyone interested in these roles can contact Beryl Fernandez at firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange an informal discussion. All applicants for adult roles will need to pass an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
