A BARN has been severely damaged in a village near Oundle just hours after the finals of a world championship finished.
Firefighters from two crews – Oundle and Thrapston – were initially called to the scene, in Main Road, Ashton, at about 4pm yesterday (12 October).

They arrived to find the barn, containing straw, was well alight and they battled to contain it.

The fire had started just a couple of hours after thousands of people had attended the World Conker Championships in the village.

A fire investigation is due to take place later today to determine the cause of the fire.
