I'M writing about the new Co-op store in the Orton shopping centre.
I visited this new store on Wednesday, the day after it opened. Boy was I disappointed – the prices are sky high.

How will they make any headway with stores like Tesco, Asda, Aldi, Lidl etc being so much cheaper?

Are they just hitting on the elderly who live close by and want them to shop with them because they cannot travel to the cheaper stores? If so that is profiteering.

I used to shop with Rainbow (Co-op-related) when it was in the same housing as QD, they had great bargains and was a store that would entice customers in. I have visited this new store just once and that will be the only time I go. Listening to other folk who were there, the same obviously seems to apply.

The store looks great and it's nicely laid out – but the prices spoil it, which is a shame.

I also went to the new Rainbow the day after it opened and was also not impressed.
They make you pay for parking (unlike Tesco, or Sainsbury's or Morrisons). I didn't have any coins so risked not being caught on the grounds there were no busybody traffic wardens in the unlit building site that passes for a carpark.
Then I couldn't get a trolley because I didn't have any coins (unlike Tesco or Sainsbury's where you don't need any).
Then I took one look at the prices and decided not to bother.
Not impressed.

To correct the above - you can park at the Orton Centre for free for 2 hours, provded you take a free ticket from the machine. After this parking becomes £3.00 for the day, presumably to prevent local workers from using the car park whilt at work.

This is why I was glad when Rainbow closed down in Werrington and the new Tesco opened. Rainbow's prices have always been high but when it's your only local supermarket, you end up having to pay them.

Prices are high because they're probably having to pay fat cat salaries and provide fancy Audi's/Mercs to the so called mangt there!

Prices are higher at Co-op (think what that very name implies) because they are paying EVERYONE in the ENTIRE chain a fair whack.

Chain = suppliers > transport > stores > your dividend

I did say this a couple of weeks ago when people were talking on the site about it's impending opening.

The only people who will pay prices that are marginally better than a local spar shop will be those who have no transport etc.

I haven't even been in as I knew this would be the case.
How long do we give it before they bail out and sell the site to Asda, Tesco or Aldi?
