A SCHOOL has received an award in recognition of its hard work in building strong connections within the global community.
Nene Valley Primary School, in Sugar Way, has been presented with an international schools award by the British Council.

The school has worked towards achieving the award as part of its global dimension project.

It is one of six schools in Peterborough to be a part of the project to build a deeper bond and better understanding of the international community.

Headteacher Stuart Mansell said: “We’ve had to build up a portfolio over the year and show how we’ve covered several aspects.

“One of the aspects was to establish links with two schools in other countries, and we’ve built links with four schools.”

Youngsters at the school have been building relationships with primary schools in Australia, Canada, Africa and India.

They share a webpage with the school in Australia and pass photos, stories and news back and forth.

Mr Mansell believes teaching the children about different cultures is an important lesson and teaches them values which will help them when they leave school and venture into the world.

He said: “We cover conflicts, resolutions, global issues and even Fairtrade.

“The children are very into Fairtrade. They keep asking where things come from and whether or not certain things are Fairtrade.

“The school council is even thinking about getting Fairtrade cereal bars in the tuck shop. It’s great that it’s something the children thought of themselves.”

Year 3 teacher Susan Bell, who is also the school’s global dimension leader, attended a ceremony in London last month to collect the international schools award.

Mr Mansell said: “We’re very pleased to have won it. We have a trophy cabinet in the hall, and the award has taken pride of place in there.”
