Nigel Thornton: An Opportunity not to be missed - 11/10/07

Nobody died, nobody got hurt. So does it really matter that a survey commissioned by Opportunity Peterborough spelled several well-known city place names horribly wrong?
Nes and yo.
OP says mistakes happen. Yes they do, and we all make them, even embarrassing ones such as those contained in this survey which will be used to create a strategy for Peterborough's future.
The report, produced by consultancy firm Arup, referred to Fergate, Boomgate, Blitton, and, even more confusingly, to Conield Wood and West Ron.
Mistakes can be turned into positives, if the response is handled well.
But OP defended the mistakes by saying they were a "verbatim'' account of people's responses.
Does OP really expect us to believe that people who live and work in the city don't know the names of places such as Boongate and Bretton?
Equally unbelievable is the claim that it does not know how much the survey cost.
Well, if it doesn't, it damn well should. Not least, because this money is tax-payers' money. My money, your money.
The frankly pathetic reasoning for ignorance of the cost is the funding for the survey came from several sources.
When me and My Special Friend did this week's shop at the supermarket, our money came from more than one source.
A bit came from MSF's bank account (she has to top up her shoe fund), a lot more came from mine and then there was the tenner we won on the lottery. But we knew what the bill was. The lady on the check-out told us. And no doubt someone from Arup has done something similar.
op has a duty to spend our money in a proper manner. How can it do this if it doesn't even know how much this survey cost?
So mistakes have been made but we should now all move on because Opportunity Peterborough has an incredibly important job to do. And how well it does it will have an impact on every single man woman and child in this city for years to come.
It has to get it right.
Let's not underestimate how difficult a job it is. The scale of the development it is charged with driving forward is huge. It is a complex business.
But OP – and don't forget there's a new man at the helm so we must give him a period of grace – has to raise its game.
There may well have been much good work done in the background, but it needs to start communicating better with the residents who will benefit or suffer for the decisions being taken now.
It needs to win the hearts and minds of the people of the city. A good start would be to stop insulting our intelligence and show greater transparency.
