MATING birds could be one of the reasons why thousands of commuters were left frustrated at the city railway station yesterday, after dozens of trains to London were cancelled.
Half a mile of power lines were believed to have failed between Huntingdon and Peterborough, on the major route into London from the city.

A spokeswoman for Network Rail, which maintains the tracks, said investigations into the incident were ongoing, but that birds had not been ruled out as the cause of the problem.

Engineers began repair work at 10am yesterday, after a problem was reported at about 6.45am.

First Capital Connect offered passengers a coach service to Huntingdon from Peterborough, where they could catch a connecting train to London.

A spokesman for train operator GNER said that the problem was fixed at about 2.30pm, with a near- normal service running by the evening peak times.

He said: "Work to fix the power lines went very well and feedback from the commuters was very positive.

"We would like to apologise to any passengers who were caused any inconvenience."

The spokesman added that commuters who purchased tickets yesterday would be able to use them on trains today.
