LETTER: Mandate needed for Peterborough City Council

I feel we should have another referendum, not on the EU, but on local government, which is the biggest growth industry in Peterborough.

It’s top heavy, too expensive and wasteful. It has unloaded many of its responsibilities. It has disposed of council housing and contracted out street cleaning, bin collections, allotments and much more. Yet it continues to grow more expensive and is hiding the true cost. In this period of austerity we are expected to tighten our belts, it’s a pity that they do not lead by example. They have an arrogant disregard for the taxpayers who keep them in their comfortable jobs. We have for years had a cabinet-run council, yet throughout that time we have also had the needless extravagance of a Mayor’s department. They created Cross Keys Homes as a company and transferred housing stock to them on the pretext that they could afford to upgrade properties that the council could not.
