Pupils and staff from Heltwate School were overjoyed to receive a surprise cheque for over £2,000 from the Kelly Simmonds Trust.

Brothers Andy and Stuart Simmonds, who run the Ploughman and the Dragon pubs in Werrington, raised the money on behalf of their sister Kelly who died in January 2013.

Shortly after her death the pair started raising funds for the Respiratory Sleep Study Unit at Papworth Hospital where Kelly was cared for.

They set a target of raising £10,000 by 2014 and ended up raising well over £17,000.

But, following a short break, they decided they wanted to do something for the school where Kelly was a pupil, and after emptying the Trust bank account they had over £2,000. The money was presented at the end of January and the two brothers are planning a year of further fundraising activities.

Andy said: “The school really helped Kelly and when we emptied the bank account we had £2654.23. Tim Humphries, who used to teach Kelly was one of the people at the cheque presentation which was really nice. We were given a tour of the school and we are now hoping to do more events for them.”
