More than 40 fire service staff are tackling a fire at a car lot in Fengate.

Firefighters are continuing to extinguish the blaze having been called just before 1pm today (Tuesday, July 19).

Seven fire engines and more than 40 fire service staff are in attendance at the fire involving a large quantity of wooden pallets and a number of vehicles.

The fire is under control and crews are working with hose reels, jets and monitors to continue to extinguish it.

A forklift is also being used to clear pallets to assist with firefighting.

Group Commander Gary Mitchley said: “The crews are working extremely hard in very tough conditions to do their best to tackle the fire. The early intervention by firefighters has contained the fire and stopped it from spreading. We will continue to extinguish the fire over the coming hours.”

The cause of the fire will be investigated once it is fully extinguished.

The smoke coming from Fengate could be seen from miles away.

The road has been closed between Boongate and Bishop’s Road with diversions in place.
