Man thanks passers-by and emergency crews after escaping 'scary' A1M crash with bumps and bruises

Brian Scully was driving on the A1M near Peterborough on Wednesday evening, April 27, when he was involved in a six vehicle crash.

His car left the road and overturned, coming to rest by the side of the carriageway.

Amazingly he only suffered “bumps and bruises” and has now thanked those who rushed to help him.

Brian, who works for Peterborough based BGL Group, said: “I Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped me out of this, from the passers by who stayed with me initially (I’m so sorry I don’t remember your names), to all the emergency services and not forgetting the Air Ambulance.

“Probably one of the most scariest moments in my life and I’m so very thankful to still be here with just a few bumps and bruises.”

Another eyewitness Stephen Pearson described “A sudden burst of hailstones coated the road surface in water and ice” turning the road into a “three lane ice rink.”

Multiple fire, police and ambulance crews, including the air ambulance, were called to the road between Haddon and Yaxley at around 6.19pm.

The crash involved six vehicles, a Peugeot, a white van, minibus, white Ford Fiesta, black BMW and a white Mercedes saloon

Watch Commander Matt House said: “This incident involved a large number of vehicles including one which had overturned, and saw the ambulance treat a number of casualties on the scene as well as one person taken to hospital.

“The multi-agency approach between the fire service, ambulance and air ambulance paramedics and police resulted in the incident being dealt with as quickly and efficiently as possible ensuring the best possible treatment for the casualties involved.

“We’re experiencing lots of changing weather at the moment and we would advise all drivers to take extra care on the roads during these coming days and weeks; drive to the conditions and leave plenty of room between your car and the vehicle in front.”
