An empty police car rolled away and crashed into a building after an officer stopped to break up a fight.

The crash happened in Broad Street, Stamford, in the early hours of New Year’s Day (January 1). A police spokesman said: “An officer was driving a marked Ford Focus along Broad Street when she saw a fight taking place.

“She got out of her vehicle to respond to the fight, setting the handbrake and securing her vehicle as she did. It appears the car rolled into a gate and early indications suggest it looks likely that was due to a fault with the handbrake, which is now being addressed by our vehicle examiners.

“The officer was not injured, nor was anybody else.”

Several images of the crash were posted on social media, and it appears to have happened at the entrance to Wellington Lane, outside Barclays bank.
