AN investigation is under way following the death of a pedestrian involved in an accident with a car at a level crossing on the A47 bypass near Wisbech at 5.30pm on Sunday.
Jolanta Baciuliene (43) of Pippin Drive, Wisbech, suffered fatal injuries in the incident.
A black Fiat Punto involved in the accident was being driven by a 35-year-old woman from Leicester, who was not hurt.
At the time of the incident Ms Baciuliene was being accompanied by a man, who was also not hurt.
The incident happened close to the road’s junction with Halfpenny Lane and resulted in a stretch of the road being closed until 1.30am on Monday.
Police are investigating the incident and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire Police said: “Emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a collision between a pedestrian and a car.
“On arrival they found that a female pedestrian had sustained fatal injures. The woman was with a man at the time of the collision who was unharmed during the incident.
“The car involved in the collision was a black Fiat Punto which was being driven by a 35-year-old woman from Leicester. She was also uninjured during the incident.
“We are keen to hear from anyone with information about the incident and particularly from anybody who witnessed the collision.”
A spokeswoman for British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed it was not investigating the incident.
A number of people have lost their lives on the A47 Wisbech bypass in recent times.
In November last year, 74-year-old Wisbech woman Vera Wiser-Loots died in a car crash as she travelled to comfort the son of her friend who had just died.
Ms Wiser-Loots was on her way to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at King’s Lynn in the early hours on November 8 when her blue Suzuki Splash left the road on the A47 and ended in a ditch.
The Wisbech bypass was blocked in both directions for more than three hours after the crash, which happened yards from the spot where Fenland councillor and former Wisbech Standard editor Roger Green died in a collision in July last year.
Cllr Green was driving a car which was involved in a head-on collision on the A47, close to the junction with Broad End Road, Walsoken, on the Cambridgeshire Norfolk border at 3pm on July 18.
Cllr Green’s blue Nissan Almera was travelling towards King’s Lynn when it collided with a black Audi A4 estate heading in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Audi, a man in his mid 40s from the Leicester area, received arm and leg injuries while his female passenger received internal injuries.
Cllr Green was flown to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge by Magpas Helimedix in the Magpas helicopter. However, he died from his injuries.
Anyone with information about the collision on Sunday is asked to call Cambridgeshire Police on 101.
Information can also be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111,
