‘Hero’ nurse helps save driver in ditch
A PASSING Good Samaritan was described as a heroine for her help in saving a driver whose car ended up in a ditch.
The man, in his 20s, was involved in a collision with another car in Raveley Road, in Woodwalton, near Sawtry, at about 8am yesterday.
His Ford Fiesta ended up in a deep ditch at the side of the road but a passing nurse stayed with him for almost two hours while firefighters battled to free him
Magpas, the medical charity, was also on scene helping firefighters free the man and treating him before he was taken to Peterborough City Hospital.
He suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, but medics feared the onset of hypothermia because of the sub-zero temperatures.
Dr Fiona Bowles said: “If it hadn’t been for the swift actions of Magpas, the fire service and the East of England Ambulance Service on the scene, this man would have suffered severe hypothermia.”
And a spokeswoman for Magpas praised the nurse, saying she had been a “hero” for her actions.
Firefighters took more than an hour to free the driver because of the position the was in. The road reopened at 9.45am.
