DfT grant to provide free bike training

A FUNDING boost of more than £500,000 from the Government has meant that charges for Bikeability training in Cambridgeshire will be scrapped.

Cambridgeshire County Council currently charges for cycle training but has been aided by a £540,000 grant from the Department for Transport, as well as a £10,000 from its own budget.

It will provide 4,000 free cycle training places in 2012/13; 4,500 the year after and 5,000 the year after that, meaning a total of 13,500 primary school students will receive the training at no cost.

County council cabinet member for community infrastructure, Councilllor Steve Criswell, said: “We currently charge for cycle training, but following a wider review of the road safety budget where we have made some spending saving by cutting overheads and with the support from DfT, from the start of the next academic year we will be able to scrap the charge and provide this important road safety advice to youngsters at no cost.”

The council will receive payment from the Department for Transport retrospectively for every child who has the training.
