The popular Whittlesey Straw Bear Festival returns this month with lots of activities and entertainment for residents and visitors to enjoy.

The main day is Saturday, January 16 with the parade starting from the Manor Leisure Centre, Station Road, at 10.30am.

Between 30 and 40 dance teams will follow the Bear from the leisure centre to Market Street, after which they will perform a diverse variety of ritual British traditional dance at various sites around the town until approximately 3.30pm.

There will also be storytelling in the Methodist United and Reformed Church, Queen Street, at 12.30, 1.30 and 2.30pm with Jo Blake-Cave, acoustic music with Marina Florence, and presentations by Poets United upstairs in the Town Hall, Market Street.

There are no charges for the presentations and the Bear goes home for his tea at around 3.30pm.

The roads will be closed from 9am onwards but there is a free park-and-ride from Sir Harry Smith Community College in Eastrea Road.

The following day, the school is hosting two-and-a-half hours of dance display and music from noon followed by the bear burning at 2.30pm.
