A Peterborough referee helped players have a Christmas ball after turning up to take control of the match in a very festive outfit.

Rather than the usual black shirt, Nicola Reynolds took charge of the Salisbury verses Witney Rugby Union match dressed in a Christmassy Santa outfit.

Witney play in blue shirts and Salisbury in green & white, so she chose her trip carefully to avoid any possibility of confusion.

She said: “My club-mates bet me that I wouldn’t wear this outfit -so of course I had to.”

Speaking before the match, experienced ref Nicola said that she had read criticism of referees for spoiling games by being whistle-happy and that refs should contribute to the spectacle of the game.
