Marco Cereste celebrated winning back his place on Peterborough City Council last night, after being ousted a year ago, by making this hand gesture to the cameras...but what does it mean?
Many will be familiar with the finger symbol made popular in heavy metal culture and often seen at rock concerts. It is commonly referred to as ‘devil horns’ - but is the sign really satanic?
Well, no. It would be ridiculous to suggest Marco is making such a gesture.
So what does it say?
It’s been a symbol shown by politicians and dignitaries around the world - in fact Bill Clinton, George W Bush, Barack Obama and even The Pope have made similar gestures.
Marco could simply be using the symbol, as used at many music concerts, to say ‘rock on, I’m back.’
Hook’em Horns, as they are often known, also mean ‘I’m having a good time,’ which no doubt he was when the result for Hampton Vale was announced last night.
Another interpretation is taken from American Sign Language and means ‘I love you,’ often used by Obama - although for this you would normally extend your thumb too.
Possibly the best explanation comes from Marco’s Italian heritage, where the symbol dates back centuries.
The ‘corna sign’ draws on an old superstition and is a charm or guard against the evil eye.
And Marco will now be looking to ward off anything evil happening to his constituents in Hampton Vale where he will now serve for the next two years.
