TEMPORARY office space is being created on land opposite Peterborough train station for rail staff who will be displaced by an ongoing £2.5 million revamp.
While work started back in September to prepare platforms 4 and 5 for improvements, the work to reconstruct the main concourse has only just started.
Phase 2 of the revamp, which will involve expanding the main concourse and provide a new customer information point, started this week, meaning dozens of workers will have to be relocated.
The work is being funded by train operator East Coast and Network Rail through the Government’s National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP).
A spokesman for East Coast said: “The latest progress update on the scheme is that the project is progressing well and to plan – the first phase of the work was completed in December 2011.
“Work is now well underway on phase 2, including the expansion of the main concourse.
“The third and final phase will then follow in early spring, including a new waiting room for platforms 4 and 5.
“All the work is scheduled for completion by early summer 2012.”
When the redevelopment is completed the temporary blocks will be removed and workers will return to their offices within the train station.
The changes will bring about a smart new frontage, a lighter and brighter interior and a larger concourse.
Network Rail route director Richard Lungmuss said: “The improvements being made at Peterborough will give passengers what they want - a safer, brighter and more spacious station providing an improved environment for everyone travelling by train.”
Factfile: NSIP
THE national Government is working with train operating companies to deliver better stations across England and Wales.
The £150 million National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP) will help over 150 medium-sized stations in areas such as passenger information and facilities by 2014.
All the funding for the Peterborough train station redevelopments have been given by the NSIP, with £1.7 million received by Network Rail and £875,000 received by East Coast.

It would be nice if the ET could be consistent. One week the redevelopments cost £40 the next week it's another figure. I think ET just likes attention grabbing headlines without caring about the facts. No shock there then!
