AMBITIOUS proposals to redevelop a derelict patch of land as part of Station Gateway plans are set to get the green light next week

The plans, submitted by ING Real Estate, are to be discussed by Peterborough City Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, February 21.

The striking plans could see 635 jobs created on the site of the former Royal Mail sorting office, in Bourges Boulevard next to the railway station, and have been recommended for approval.

Previous concerns raised by the council prompted the developers to reduce the size of a proposed supermarket on the site.

It has also increased the other shopping space while reducing the number of car parking spaces.

The design includes an eye-catching 130-ft tall office block.

A report that will go before councillors says: “The foodstore element has been significantly reduced to accommodate the council’s concerns regarding retail impact and more general design considerations.

“This allows a more generous public space to the south of the site which will transform the nature of Station Road.”

If approved on Tuesday afternoon it could see a 4,300 sqm supermarket; 850 sqm of other shop units; a 300 space car park and a landscaped public realm created.

It could also see a pedestrian crossing on Bourges Boulevard, reducing the speed limit to 30 mph.

It really is time that Bourges Blvde was closed to all non public transport traffic through the 'Rivergate' section in both directions so that we can get a joined up city centre. This is a bit of a start I suppose.

@4 'congestion charging', yep that's all too likely the hidden-agenda of the lunatic PCC. But don't fret, it's all 'green' and you can take a water-taxi (although the Nene doesn't go anywhere near the Station).

Agree with #1 - They are going ahead with a crossing at the foot of the bridge, surely not now another one just a few yards ahead. PCC have really got an agenda to gridlock the city - how long before the first bright spark tells us congestion is a problem and they will therefore introduce congestion charging. You have to say though, their gridlock planning is working very well, unecessary traffic lights all over, crossings under bridges and unecessary bus lanes.

That carpark was at least competition to the National Rail parking. If this goes, commuters will be robbed blind as NR whacks the prices up! The PCC are still in la-la land - there's not jobs in Pottyborough, everyone has to commute unless they want to stuff boxes on the line (at that's only open to Poles)

30MPH? How do we call for those in charge of Peterborough's road network to be tested for competence? Every single project they've undertaken of late has made travel worse for all concerned.

Nice to see some positive development going on, though it's a shame the opportunity wasn't taken to build a new station building on the site to replace the outdated facilities currently in place. bit worried about the crossing over Bourges Boulevard and the impact this may have on traffic flows through the city. With this and the lunatic proposal to replace the Mayors Walk underpass with another crossing, Peterborough risks becoming gridlocked. A subway or fully accessible footbridge is the only sensible option here.
