Marco to stand for the Tories

The controversial former leader, who surprisingly lost his seat in Stanground Central last year, will stand to be a councillor in Hampton Vale.

Mr Cereste was council leader for six years and did not completely rule out a return to the top post. He said: “In life the only thing that’s certain is death. Being a leader cost me an absolute fortune.

“I’ve lost one business and had others in difficulty. It would take a huge amount of convincing for me to be leader again.”

The desire to represent Peterborough has drawn Mr Cereste back to the council despite enjoying his time off. He said: “Having much more time spend with the family is great.”

The straight-talking businessman divides opinion, but he said the messages of support he has received since been picked as a candidate have been “overwhelming.”

He said: “People who do not normally get involved in elections are offering to do deliveries so there are a lot of people pleased to see me back.”

Asked if the goodwill extended to current Tory councillors, he said: “I hope the majority will welcome me back. There will be some that spit and curse but that’s democracy.”

The resident of Longthorpe also said he has many ties with Hampton, including getting his fish and chips from Churchills in Stewartby Avenue. He added: “I love it and I spend a lot of time here with my family. I was personally responsible for finding the finances for the leisure centre.”

Council leader Cllr John Holdich said: “I welcome Marco back with his experience and passion for the city.”
