First shortlisted Labour Parliamentary candidate

Nicola Day-Dempsey has been shortlisted as a possible candidate for the Labour party for a future Peterborough parliamentary election.

Nicola Day-Dempsey has been shortlisted as a possible candidate for the Labour party for a future Peterborough parliamentary election.

A woman who gave the former city council leader a close election battle earlier this year has been shortlisted as a potential Parliamentary Candidate for the Labour party.

Nicola Day-Dempsey, who lives in Park ward, will still face competition from three other people to stand as the party candidate.

The final selection will come on September 8, but Ms Day-Dempsey is the only shortlisted candidate to be revealed so far.

A spokeswoman for the Labour party did reveal that all four candidates on the shortlist will be women.

In May, Ms Day Dempsey received 1,284 votes when standing for the Labour party against Cllr John Peach, who won the election with 1,530 votes.

Since then, Ms Day-Dempsey has been involved with a number of online arguments with MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson, who personally helped with Cllr Peach’s re-election campaign.

Ms Day-Dempsey said: “I am delighted to have been shortlisted by the Peterborough Labour Party for Parliamentary Candidate.

“If selected I will form and lead a strong and unified team that will run and organised and efficient campaign that will crush the opposition.

“I will fight with tenacity and strength to defend our residents, public services, businesses, schools and hospitals.

“I will push for policies that promote social justice and sustainable economic growth.

“People are uncertain about the future, their jobs and the political and financial systems they live in.

“It is now more than ever that we need to see ‘real change’ for Labour and for the people.

‘Peterborough has some of the highest employment levels, the lowest educational attainment levels and some of the highest poverty levels in the eastern region.

“It is now more tha ever that the people of Peterborough need a Labour MP.

“Peterborough is also my home constituency, it is the place I have grown up in, raised my child, completed a degree and it is where I work.

“I will be the very best for Peterborough and our People as Labour Candidate and MP at Westminster.”

Earlier this year, Ms Day-Dempsey was on a shortlist to sit as Labour parliamentary candidate for Bedford, but former MP Patrick Hall was selected for that position earlier this month.
