Peterborough United has been granted permission to build an all-weather pitch and floodlights at its training base at Nene Park Academy.

Posh will be able to upgrade the current pitch at the academy’s grounds so it can be used in the evenings.

Both the club and the school will use the pitch alongside other primary schools.

Posh’s academy currently play matches at Nene Park.

The all-weather pitch will be in use from 8am to 9pm, Monday to Friday, and 9am to 5pm on weekdays and bank holidays.

Permission for the development was granted by Peterborough City Council’s Planning Committee on Tuesday.

Members on the committee unanimously approved the application after a short period of debate.

Councillor Peter Hiller said: “I see nothing wrong with this proposal. It’s a much needed facility.”

Cllr John Okonkowski said: “I’m mad about sport and I’m all for this.”

Cllr David Harrington added: “If there is an ideal location for this kind of facility this is the actual spot.”

Council planning officers had recommended that the application go ahead. Posh are currently 13th in League One, English football’s third tier.
