With fallen leaves and flower beds in autumn leading to extra garden waste, Peterborough City Council is encouraging residents to get composting.
The council has teamed up with Getcomposting.com to offer home compost bins from £9, and there is currently a ‘buy one get one half price’ offer on some bins while stocks last.
Councillor Gavin Elsey, council cabinet member for digital, waste and street scene, said: “Do not look at it as waste. Your old garden debris has the potential to give you a free supply of top quality compost with very little effort.
“Simply throw it into a compost bin and over the winter months it will rot down to produce environmentally friendly compost that when added to the garden will suppress weeds and retain moisture throughout the dry months.”
Benefits of home composting include: it is easy to make and easy to use, it produces a free continual source of the very best compost, it improves soil structure and it maintains moisture and helps the soil pH balance which measures its acidity and alkaline levels.
Home composting is also said to suppress plant disease, reduce the need for polluting bonfires and carbon emissions, and helps to divert organic waste from landfill.
