Over 600 mince pies and a whole host of other Christmas goodies were donated to Parnwell Primary School this week from the nearby Tesco warehouse.

The new headteacher, Janice Butterworth, who was appointed in September, approached the supermarket managers in the hope of a small donation to the school’s Christmas lunch.

What she didn’t expect was the huge lorry which then arrived containing more festive bootie than Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve. Mrs Butterworth said: “When I saw the lorry and what was in it I could have cried.

“I have worked with businesses before in other schools but I have never seen such a generous donation as this one.

“I know Tesco get their fair share of bad press so I just couldn’t believe it. We have been given so much that we are able to give every child and their parents a small gift.”

The 300-pupil school also received 70 boxes of chocolates, 10 footballs and enough items to make up two hampers which will be raffled off to raise funds.
