The column that shouts about views and issues concerning Peterborough from a variety of perspectives. This time, Lisa Forbes, Labour parliamentary candidate for Peterborough, on Small Business Saturday...
Small and independent businesses in Peterborough make a vital contribution to our community, add to the character of our city and are a source of local jobs.
That’s why I would like to highlight the event again this year and encourage you all to get behind our local shops and firms as part the 2nd UK Small Business Saturday.
The idea of ‘Small Business Saturday’ comes from the USA. Chuka Umunna, the Shadow Business Secretary, had the idea to bring the concept to the UK and a movement was born.
Small Business Saturday is a grass-roots campaign that encourages people to shop locally and support small and independent businesses in the local community and receives cross party support.
Last year was the first time it took place and it was the largest celebration of small business the country has ever seen. Nearly half of consumers who knew about the day made purchases because of it and almost £500m of extra trade went to small firms.
It also helped local small business link together, championed their vital role in local communities and created a buzz about people starting out in business and becoming entrepreneurs.
That’s why I’ll be celebrating Small Business Saturday again on Saturday 6 December, one of the busiest shopping days of the year in the run up to Christmas and I’ll be encouraging people to shop at local small firms and businesses to make the event even bigger this year.
I’ll be working with small and independent businesses in Peterborough to support and highlight any special events to celebrate their contribution to the local economy and the local community.
I would encourage all small business to take advantage of the day and the huge amount of national publicity that will be surrounding it. Last year it was trending on Twitter throughout the day at #SmallBizSat
If any local small business owners are interested in promoting their business as part of the celebrations then please see smallbusinesssaturdayuk.com where you will find a great resource for more information and ideas or you can contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will help to advise you and advertise it too.
You can also promote your event on social media in the run up to the day to let your customers and followers know about the date and the concept of Small Business Saturday. You can also ask me to retweet your small business or firm by tweeting me @LisaForbes_
Good luck! Let’s all back our small independent Peterborough businesses on 6th of December 2014.
