I WRITE on the subject of the cycling ban in Bridge Street, Peterborough.I am an advocate of cycling, however, there is a problem in Bridge Street because the ban is not enforced.
Perhaps on the spot fines of 100, issued by police officers, are what is needed to stop people flouting the ban.
Cyclists are being lazy, selfish and inconsiderate by pedalling along Bridge Street. If everyone on a bike went slowly, and with care, that would be OK, but they do not, and will not.
My little girl is partially-sighted. We were in Bridge Street recently and there were no bikes were around, so I told her she could safely run two yards in front of me. As she did so, a cyclist appeared from nowhere and headed straight towards her at high speed. I yelled, and he missed her by a whisker.
If a ban is not firmly enforced, there could be a death of an innocent child, or older person. Everyone is in danger.
Remember that many fit-looking people have health problems,such as sight or hearing impairments. Cyclists do not know who they are.
I do realise that it may be safer for all concerned to cycle very slowly on the pavement when there are few people around and traffic is heavy. I used to cycle through town to work , but I dismounted in Bridge Street, so why can't others?
I cycle to town when I can now, but I still walk through Bridge Street.

Thanks for making family event a hit
THE Stamford Family Fun Day and It's a Knockout 2008 event really was the most incredible day.
We greeted approximately 8,000 visitors and raised 4,000, which will be put back into our local community through the Stamford and District Kiwanis group.
There are so many people we would like to thank – Burghley Estate provided us with the most beautiful setting and a perfect venue. Our main sponsor Cummins Generator Technologies, and many of its staff worked incredibly hard all weekend.
Little Tikes gave us hundreds of toys and pieces of play equipment for the children to use, which went down a storm.
Goodwin Property Services, The Ark Nursery, St George's Church, Bullimores, Ambitions Personnel, Bowman's, Leisure Connection, Watson Mitchell Blackburn, Visions Children's Centre, V Couzens (Stamford) , RA Conboy Insurance, Murray Estate Agent, Cloisters Italian Bistro and Chatterton's Solicitors all gave generous sponsorships.
Grants from South Kesteven District Council and Stamford Town Council were very much appreciated.
Hundreds of people and businesses made the event possible. Without their help this event would not have been possible.
It really is very moving to see so many families having such a great time in our beautiful park.

Unbearable heat in buses needs sorting
Congratulations to John Hammond ("Bus was too hot for comfort", Your Telegraph, August 5).
I regularly travel on buses between Bretton and Queensgate which have hot air blasting through them. It’s great in winter, but unbearable in the warm weather we have had recently.
Are Stagecoach aware of this, and the fact that the term “well done” is what passengers should be saying about the comfort of their journeys, and not the condition they are in when they arrive at their destination?
