Raz Jabbin: At least Pakistan know how to play cricket
OK, so they're probably the worst dancers in the world, but at least Pakistan know how to play cricket.
OK, so they're probably the worst dancers in the world, but at least Pakistan know how to play cricket. It was so nice to see the Pakistani community having something to celebrate for once.
Seeing the cars and flags being displayed on Lincoln Road, in support of Pakistan's victory in the Twenty20 World Cup final against Sri Lanka was a proud moment, and one that brought back a lot of memories from my childhood.
I remember how exciting I found the game when I was young. My family would all go to the park, set up the wickets, with someone doing a show-off run-up before bowling the ball, usually resulting in me screaming and running away from the ball.
Whether I was batting or on the field, it didn't matter, the result was always the same.
But Pakistan was isolated as a cricket host earlier this year, after the Sri Lanka team were attacked during their time in the country while travelling to a match in Lahore. Tragically, seven people were killed and some members of the Sri Lankan team party were injured.
It meant that the Twenty20 final was more than a game, it was a statement.
It was a stand against terrorism, against all those who wanted to taint the game for Pakistan. However, for some, it didn't seem to matter what had been achieved or that it was a cause for celebration for many.
After having read the story covering the celebrations in Lincoln Road in The ET accompanied with some fun looking pictures, to then reading some of the comments in the story and then on the website, I was left somewhat disheartened.
Many understood the fact that it was just a hearty celebration for a country whose people have not had much to celebrate over previous years.
Whereas others, such as the person who goes by the name of Innocent Bystander, preferred to make reference to not expecting much more of people from a Third World country. What a malicious sentiment I thought.
As the comments persisted it became more about "look what those people can get away with because they're Asian and we can't because we're not", which is absolutely not true.
