Peterborough City Council is holding a number of events to gauge the views of local people on a range of issues. They have dubbed the series of events 'The Big Debate' and they are being held throughout February. The Big Debate aims to help decision makers understand what local people think. Would you like to give your views on how the economic downturn has affected Peterborough? Do you have an opinion about the impact it has had on vulnerable children and adults that you know? Would you like to have your say on how the recession has affected the level of crime in your part of the city?

The event on Tuesday February 2 is all about the Environment Capital and specifically future transport options for the city. It is being held at Buckles Solicitors on Bourges Boulevard at 5.30pm.

The meeting is being hosted by the Environment Capital Scrutiny Committee which is made up of different local councillors representing different political parties and areas of the city.

The organisers are keen to get a cross-section of people involved in the event - "those who work or are interested in the environmental sector, parents, representatives for voluntary and community organisations, people of all ages and from all walks of life who live in our diverse city."

It might not be the most obviously appealing way to spend a Tuesday evening, but it's definitely a worthwhile one. If you have opinions about the future of the city which usually only get an airing in the pub or from the comfort of your favourite arm chair while you scan the Evening Telegraph, this event is for you! Your three piece suite might make a patient audience that listens without interruption but unfortunately it won't make much difference to the plans for Peterborough.

There are also some other Big Debate events which you might be interested in:

The Creating Opportunities and Tackling Inequalities Scrutiny Committee which will be meeting on Thursday February 4 at 5.30pm at Peterborough College of Adult Education to look at how vulnerable adults and children are being supported.

The Strong and Supportive Communities Scrutiny Committee which will be meeting on Tuesday February 16 at 5pm at the Key Theatre to look at the amount and type of crime in Peterborough.

The Sustainable Growth Scrutiny Committee will be meeting on Wednesday February 17 at 5.30pm at the Town Hall to look at how the city can continue to grow and overcome the effects of the economic downturn.

To book a place or to find out more call the scrutiny team on (01733) 747474 If you can't attend but would still like to be involved you can send your written submissions to Scrutiny Team, Democratic Services, Town Hall, Bridge Street, Peterborough, PE1 1HG or email scrutiny@peterborough.gov.uk by Friday 29 January 2010.
