Letter: Make city's MP see we must save Royal Mail - 03/07/09

Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson supports selling off Royal Mail.

Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson supports selling off Royal Mail.Though the issue is currently "on the back burner", it has not gone away completely.

The Bill is currently awaiting its second reading in the House of Commons.

Currently, there has been only one company that has expressed a desire to buy into Royal Mail, CVC Capital Partners, which is a private equity firm which has its headquarters in Luxembourg, though other companies such as TNT were initially said to be interested.

If the sale was to be given the green light, it would mean that a foreign company would have a major say in the running of Royal Mail.

The move to sell any part of Royal Mail has huge public opposition, especially when a foreign investor is to be considered, as has been proven in a survey commissioned by the CWU (Communication Workers Union).

Under such a 'partnership' it is very likely that service to Royal Mail's customers would worsen and prices would increase to drive profits.

There is an alternative, which is what Stewart Jackson should be supporting.

This motion (EDM 428) calls for a wholly publicly-owned, integrated Royal Mail Group, that:

Protects the six days a week delivery.

Recommends that the Government should take responsibility for the pensions deficit which followed an extended contributions holiday.

Rejects the recommendation of the Hooper Report to sell a minority stake in Royal Mail, which would risk fracturing one of Britain's greatest public services.

The privatisation (or joint partnership) of Royal Mail would be a disaster for the Great British public. It would see, yet again, UK taxpayers' money going to foreign investors for little return.

I urge your readers to write to Stewart Jackson and tell him that you wish him, as your elected MP, to vote in support of EDM 428.
