Letter: Incident sets unwelcome precedent - 30/06/09

I write regarding the closure of the Eye Library over-50s coffee club because of health and safety fears. It would appear to me to be in the interest of the council's budget to further reduce the number of people who use the library, so the council can achieve its aim of closure. The opening hours have already been reduced to save money.

There is yet again a lack of joined-up thinking, caused by increasingly wacky health and safety legislation and the council's fears of being sued.

It appears to me the council would much rather see the library dwindle to the point of closure than risk the slight possibility of an unruly child bumping into a member of this essential community group.

Of course it would be the holder of the coffee cup rather than the parent who allowed the child to run around who would be to blame.

Unless the situation can be resolved it will set an unwelcome precedent for any similar group. Let us hope the council steps up and recognises what's really important in this situation.
