The Peterborough Telegraph (May 29) has shown us the congestion and delay we may expect for the next year or more due to the work to alter Bourges Boulevard between the volunteer fire station roundabout and the Queensgate (Crescent Bridge) roundabout.

From what we have seen traffic will build up on many roads that lead to the city centre. Access to Queensgate will become slow and tedious whether by bus or by car. It seems likely that shoppers will move to out of town shops or to smaller towns with easier access.

Businesses in the city centre may suffer badly from loss of customers. If the scheme goes to completion traffic will be impeded by the two projected pedestrian crossings on the affected section of Bourges Boulevard. Looking ahead to the winter, the combination of wet dead leaves, narrowed carriageways and pedestrian crossings could prove pretty dangerous!

Let us hope that the reconstituted city council will move swiftly to cancel this foolish project. Money to compensate the contractors would be money well spent.

John Myles

(UKIP candidate for Peterborough City Council)
