Kev Lawrence: The man behind the mic column - 02/02/10

The news was more exciting than finding out who Mike had married on the new series of Desparate Housewives. (Susan by the way) More sensational thanwatching AlexReid's big moment winningCelebrity Big Brother (Yawn).

And I would suggest our newswas even more gripping, than reading about howa weasel-facedEngland football playerhad beenallegedly cheating with the girlfriend of one of is team-mates. (given the average number of brain cells in each professional footballer, this story was not all that much of a shock to me – although adultery with a mate's woman is the lowest of the low)

At 7.55am on Friday morning's Heart Breakfast show, we announced the news that JLS were set to do a big concert in Peterborough. The phones went into meltdown, as did the website andthe text lines. Most were ecstatic, although one chap wasn't. "Who are JLS, and what's all the fuss?" he asked.

"Two number one singles, two Mobos, a triple-platinum number one debut album, and three Brit nominations," was my reply.

It is actually quite remarkable what the boys have achieved in such a short space of time. And while a level of success hasalready come, I know that graft, desire, focus and commitment remains very much the centre of what they are doing now, as they look to consolidate and then build upon their achievements so far. So many pop acts disappear in a flash – especially if they find fame quickly.

I love the idea that a former Jack Hunt School pupil is fronting Britain's biggest boy band, and announcing that Heart is bringing his group to the city for a huge outdoor concert was just fantastic. Aston is a brilliant role model, and it's wonderful that his success is helping put our city onto the map.

The outdoor venue offers a 20,000 capacity for the concert, which for me has an up side and a down side. When we did the Busted, Blue, and Will Young concerts, about 10,000 people attended, and the atmosphere was electric. But those at the back, particularly younger, not so tall concert-goers, may not have had the best of views. If the JLS concert sells out, and you get to The Embankment later than most, you may find yourself quite far away. That said, unlike a sit-down theatre style concert, the atmosphere that gets created for an outdoor "let's all have a boogie" type gig can be so much better.

There's been speculation too, on the support acts. Lemar, Olly Murs, and Jedward have all been mentioned. At the time of writing this, no contracts have yet been signed – although the rumoured acts I would hope would not be too far off the mark.

The gig takes place on Sunday, July 18, with all tickets priced at 28.50 – for more info click on www.heart.co.uk
