A mystery couple whose romantic engagement was caught on camera in front of Peterborough’s Christmas tree have spoken of their joy following the festive proposal.

The moment Ian Peasgood (45) got down on one knee and popped the question to Anita Robson (44) in Cathedral Square on December 10 was captured by photographer Emma Gordon - although neither she nor the happy couple realised it at the time.

It was only when 22-year-old Emma, from Yaxley looked at the photos later when she realised her spectacular pictures included a silhouette of the couple at the moment Anita said yes, and an online appeal to identify the pair was launched as the images went viral.

Ian contacted the Peterborough Telegraph when Anita spotted the photographs online.

He said: “We met online in January, and we knew we wanted to get engaged. I wanted it to be somewhere special, not just anywhere, and the first time we met was in Peterborough.

“We were doing a bit of late night shopping, and I thought it would be nice.”

Anita - daughter of Peterborough United legend Tommy Robson - said: “I knew it was coming, but I did not know where or when. We were in town and he started pulling me towards the tree.

“Then he got down on one knee.

“It was really weird as there was hardly anyone else in the square - although I do remember seeing some photographers under the Guildhall and saying ‘I bet we will be in the papers.’

“I had not seen any of the pictures before, but they are really nice.”

The couple may have only known each other for less than a year, and have been engaged for less than a week, but they already have a date set for their wedding.

Ian said: “I work as a farmer in Leicester, and Anita lives in Whittlesey, but we make it work.

“I think the distance makes you appreciate each other more.

“I finish my shift at 5pm, and then come over to Whittlesey, and leave at 3am to start again.

“When you know you have found the right person, you know. You make it work.

“We have already set the date for our wedding, which will be on June 17 2017.

“We are still looking for a venue and other ideas.”

But Anita said one venue had already been ruled out - despite her famous father’s exploits.

She said: “It will not be at Peterborough United, that is for sure. Ian is not a football fan anyway.

“My dad found out we were engaged on Facebook. All our families are very excited for us.

“We will be spending Christmas in Whittlesey this year.”

Emma Gordon said she was surprised by how widely shared her picture had become.

She said: “I was part of a photography group taking pictures in the square.

“I took photos of the tree, but it when I got home I saw the couple.

“I didn’t expect it to go anywhere, but my friends started to share it around.”
