Yaxley: Villagers in protest over Great Haddon development

HUNDREDS of Yaxley residents flocked to a meeting held to organise a campaign against a major city development.

HUNDREDS of Yaxley residents flocked to a meeting held to organise a campaign against a major city development. The meeting was organised by UKIP parliamentary candidate for North West Cambridgeshire Robert Brown.

At the meeting on Friday, which was attended by 200 villagers, Mr Brown called for residents to take action to prevent Peterborough City Council going ahead with the Great Haddon development near Yaxley.

It will see 5,000 new homes built, alongside a new industrial park and five gypsy and traveller pitches. Consultation on the scheme runs from March 12 to April 22.

Mr Brown said: "We need to let those in power know how we feel. It is your community and your future. You need to take responsibility for the area you live in. Covering the best farmland in the world with concrete is out of order. We need to stand together and unite."

Mr Brown called on residents to write to the city council's planning department to object to the proposals.

However, many residents left the meeting early after UKIP MEP Stewart Agnew, who represents the East of England region in Europe, turned up late because of a road accident and admitted he knew nothing about the development. After the plans were explained, he said he believed it was "too late to do anything" as plans had progressed too far.
