X Factor's Olly aims to support JLS

THE runner-up in last year's X Factor competition Olly Murs wowed more than 600 screaming fans in the city while also revealing his dreams of following in the footsteps of idols JLS.The singing sensation from Essex, who lost out to Joe McElderry in December's X Factor final, performed at Peterborough's Liquid nightclub at a special under-18s event on Saturday night.

Speaking to the Evening Telegraph before he went on stage, a nervous but excited Olly said: "I am really looking forward to performing for my fans in Peterborough. I just love doing gigs, I think it is great to give something back to the people who voted for me and helped me get where I am today.

"I want to be able to go back on the show this year like JLS did last year and show the judges what I can do. JLS are great lads who have worked really hard to get where they are and I have taken a lot of advice from them since leaving X Factor. I want to follow in their footsteps.

"If the opportunity to perform with JLS in Peterborough in the summer came up then I would definitely take it.

"When I was in the final, I wanted to win, but I was happy to finish second to Joe. He deserved to win. I applied for the show in May last year and if I was told then I would finish second, I would have taken it with both hands. I couldn't have done it without the support of everyone who voted for me. I have got a great fan base and I just intend on performing as much as I can.

"I am going on the X Factor tour in a couple of weeks but then I hope to start recording a single and an album."

Olly wowed the 13 to 17-year-olds with performances of hits including Queen's Don't Stop Me Now and his personal favourite, Stevie Wonder's Superstition, which got him through his first X Factor first audition. The singer also held a meet and greet session for 100 lucky fans. Among the crowd was Alice Sansby (13) of Werrington, Peterborough, who said: "I love Olly. He has a great voice and should have won X Factor."

Natasha Russell (14) of Welland, Peterborough, said: "It is great that artists like Olly and JLS are performing in Peterborough."

JLS will play a live concert on Peterborough's Embankment on Sunday, July 18 in front of 20,000 fans. Tickets cost 28.50 and went on general release today.
